The 50-point Andalusian Olympic Week – Carnival Trophy has concluded in Cadiz, Spain with overall titles and Spanish national titles being awarded.
The Bay of Cadiz welcomed 450 athletes across 11 classes who played out the action across three racing areas over five days. A consistent westerly breeze was present across the week in the region of seven knots.
It was a double Spanish gold in the 470 with Onan Barreiros and Juan Curbelo taking the men’s title and Marina Gallego and Fatima Reyes, the women’s. As well as the overall title both teams notched up the Spanish titles in competitive fields.
There were no surprises in the Finn class with Frenchman Jonathan Lobert taking out the title followed by Hungary’s Zsomar Berecz and Thomes le Breton (FRA). Spain’s Alejandro Muscat finished comfortably ahead of compatriot Pablo Guitian Sarria to take the national title.
Switzerland’s Mateo Sanz comprehensively sealed the Men’s RS:X title with a controlled display across 12 races. Spain’s Juan Manuel Moreno Vega finished in second and subsequently took the national title. Russia’s Max Oberemko took third.
The Women’s RS:X was dominated by strong international competitors. Russia’s Olga Maslivets held off Tuuli Petaja Siren (FIN) and Malgorzata Bialecka (POL) to claim the overall title. Pilar Lamadrid took out the national title.
It was a hard fight in the Laser with no sailor taking the initiative across an intriguing 11 race series. Day one leader Alessio Spadoni (ITA) lost his early advantage and had to fight hard across the week against Argentina’s Julio Alsogaray and Czech Republic’ Viktor Teply to regain it.
A second in the final race sealed the deal for Spadoni with Alsogaray and Teply following on the podium. Jesus Rogel Sanchez (ESP) finished just two points off Teply but picked up the national title.
In the Youth divisions, Stefania Elfutina (RUS) took the RS:X title, Lourdes Campoy Borrego (ESP) snapped up the Laser 4.7 honours whilst the 420 gold went to Maria Bover Guerrero and Margarita Alba Horrach.
