Azzurra has finished the Audi Settimana delle Bocche in third place even though a technical problem forced her to withdraw from the second race.
Quantum is the topped placed boat followed by Ran. The next event in the 52 Super Series will be held in Maiorca from July 25th to 29th.
The final day of racing in the Audi Settimana delle Bocche, the second event in the 52 Super Series, saw two windward/leeward races held in northwesterly winds that gradually built from 12 to 20 knots.
In the first race a decided wind shift to the right let the British team aboard Gladiator get their first win aboard a boat that was christened just last year in Costa Smeralda at the Audi Settimana delle Bocche. Provezza placed second and Quantum third. Ran came in ninth and was beginning to be afraid for their second place overall with Azzurra close on her heels after finishing the first race in sixth place.
The second windward/leeward race got started in stronger breezes and Azzurra fell victim to technical problems with the forestay on the first beat while she was recovering well from a penalty she got just act an excellent start on the pin. Azzurra tried to finish the race to avoid the penalty in points boats are levied with in case of withdrawal- the maximum points of all boats racing plus one. But the risk of dismantling was real and Azzurra went back to port. Ran, won so her second place was assured. She was followed by Alegre and Quantum who won the event and is currently leader in the 52 Super Series.
Even though Azzurra had to withdraw she is still in third place, tied for points with Platoon, but still on the podium thanks to her previous first place finish.
The 52 Super Series fleet will now head for Puerto Portals in the Balearics where the third event in the 52 Super Series will be held from July 25th to 29th.
Quotes of the day:
Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda: ‘Azzurra got a podium finish here in her home waters. Last year she was on the highest step and we were even happier, but there is much more to sports than just winning. I ‘m sure that this boat, owned by our club members the Roemmers, will do even better in the upcoming events in the 52 Super Series.’
Guillermo Parada, skipper: “It was a bad finish for the week obviously having to abandon a race after breaking a stay. But now we have had our share of bad luck. We improved on Scarlino and we are still on the podium even with today’s retire. So the only way we can think about this is that we’re now on the way up and we now need to focus on winning the three remaining events. Our mindset should be that there are good things still to come. We need to concentrate on winning races, especially the upcoming 52 World Championships and that’s it.’
Vasco Vascotto, tactician: “A third place finish in spite of a technical problem sweetens the long series of problems we have had lately, but there’s really nothing to celebrate. On the positive side we have gotten a lot more data for tuning the boat’s setup in the upcoming events. And we can count on leaving the bad behind us.”
