It looks set to be a long day for Neutrogena as they sail towards the Straits of Gibraltar. The closer they get to the Straits the more the wind is going to be lighter and become mor NW’ly as they get progressively closer to the high which is sat, centred west of Lisbon, Guillermo Altadill and José Munoz have less than 110 miles to go to get into the Mediterranean and by midday that should be about 60 miles, passing Tarifa, sailing downwind in light airs around 20-22hrs.
Thereafter progress to Cabo de Gata looks fair in W’ly breezes, but the last miles up to Barcelona can be very slow and a lot may depend on local effects and how they can use them. ETA BCN is late on 31st.
GAES Centros Auditivos now have more breeze than Neutorgena and will continue to do so until they get north. Anna Corbella and Gérard Marín still have 20-25kts NE@ly trades and are making 11.6kts, but are still 348 miles behind the boat which leads the fleet on the water.
One Planet, One Ocean & Pharmaton still hold their advantage over We Are Water but the two now see their course improve as they get north. Their trade winds are finally veering a little more E and so that is allowing them to finally get some east in their course. The Garcia brothers are 118 miles behind in terms of DTF, the equaivalent mostly to their lateral separation.
Renault Captur are approaching the Equator. Jorg Riechers and Seb Audigane have 150 miles left in the south and will be pleased to get back into the northern hemisphere. Their Doldrums passage is also looking quite favourable, the weather files suggesting a smooth transition from the SE’ly breeze to the NE’ly.
Spirit of Hungary, Nandor Fa and Conrad Colman are sliding back into an area of very light airs, especially frustrating after they had seemed to escape from yesterday’s calm spell.
