Firstly I would like to take opportunity to you wish you all a very Happy Christmas. I would also like to thank the IFDS Executive Committee (ISAF Disabled Sailing Committee, IFDS), IFDS Committee Members, Sailors, Coaches and RNA’s for their support in 2014.
The Merger of IFDS with ISAF has been completed following the ISAF and IFDS AGM’s in Palma Mallorca. The IFDS Executive Committee is now also the ISAF Disabled Sailing Committee, IFDS. There have been concerns expressed as to how some Countries will pay their subscriptions for 2015. Countries where Disabled Sailing is run by the ISAF MNA will just pay their ISAF Annual Subscription. IFDS RNA’s who run independently of the ISAF MNA are encouraged to merge or affiliate with the ISAF MNA in their country. We are encouraging our existing RNA’s to take the opportunity to complete this merger or affiliation over the next 2 years. We will be writing to all IFDS RNAs and ISAF MNA’s to help and encourage their merger where this is not currently the position. We are also currently reviewing the current IFDS Committee Structure, to come up with a suitable vehicle in the usedly merged organization. Rio 2016: Athletes and Coaches are enquiring and expressing concern about the Test Event at the Paralympic Sailing venue in Rio.
The Rio organizing committee has not committed to running the scheduled 2015 Test Event for Paralympic Sailing. An Olympic Test Event was held in August for all 10 Olympic Classes and a further test event for all Olympic Classes is scheduled for mid-August 2015. Unfortunately IFDS have not been able to obtain a date or commitment from Rio to run a Test Event for the 3 Paralympic Classes in 2015. It is unfortunate that Paralympic Sailing is not being treated with equal importance as Olympic Sailing by the Rio Organizing Committee; hopefully the eventual legacy of the Rio Paralympics will be equality of treatment for disabled sport in Brazil.
The Disabled Sailing Committee, IFDS are continuing to work towards finding an opportunity to hold an event for the Paralympic Classes in Brazil. 2014 Asian Para Games: Sailing featured for the first time in the Asian Para Games in Incheon Korea. The event was a great success and it will hopefully lead to the inclusion of Para Sailing in future regional games.
