Monsoon Cup – Ian Williams in Quarter Finals

Ian Williams and his GAC Pindar crew made a strong statement on the final day of qualifying with a convincing victory over title rival Taylor Canfield in the eagerly anticipated showdown between the pair. Williams went on to beat home-favourite Koo in his final race of qualifying to secure the all-important first pick in the quarter finals draw.

Williams chose to face David Gilmour and has already taken a huge step towards the semi-finals by securing race wins in the first two flights of their best of five quarter final.Ian Williams GAC Pindar Finals Monsoon Cup

Commenting on the day’s racing, Williams said, “It was great to finish top of qualifying and get such a strong start in the quarter finals as it really shows how well we’re working as a team. The guys have been great so far this week and that showed in the race against Canfield. It was tight at the start, but we stuck to our game plan and were able to pull away for the win.”

“We’ve started the quarter finals well taking an important 2-0 lead. However, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves as tomorrow is a new day and Gilmour will come out fighting. We’re just taking each race as it comes”.

Not to be outdone, Canfield was similarly brutal with his chosen opponent, Wild Card entry Pierre-Antoine Morvan, also going 2-0 up. With Monnin v Robertson also on 2-0, the only evenly balanced Quarter Final is between Mathieu Richard and Keith Swinton who sit on 1-1.Ian Williams GAC Pindar Finals Monsoon Cup

The Australian skipper is happy just to be racing after being laid low the previous day with a bug. “I feel a lot better than this time yesterday, feel like I’m on an upward curve. Ricky [McGarvie, Swinton’s bowman] was even more ill than I was, was at hospital for quite a bit longer. They put him on a drip, and this morning he was still feeling average. So, thanks to Jeremy Koo for lending us Don McCracken for a race. We held on and we’re happy to get to the Quarters.”

The quarter finals will continue tomorrow, with racing commencing at 10.00 am (GMT+8).
