IFDS Blind Fleet Racing World and International Championships 2015

Last year the IFDS were asking for bids from countries wishing to host the 2015 IFDS Blind Fleet Racing World Championship. The Royal Netherlands Yacht Club, NED withdraw their initial interest, because of a lack of available boats.

Rochester Yacht Club, USA offered to host this event, but lacked time. In early June 2014 IFDS received an email from the Houston Yacht Club, USA showing their interest in organizing the event. Unfortunately, despite considerable work and discussions, they finally declined in early February 2015.

Despite the very tight time scale, Sheboygan Yacht Club, USA is working very hard to organize a 2015 IFDS Blind Fleet Racing Event together with the Chicago Yacht Club. The Chicago Yacht Club Board confirmed on the 25th March to host the event which will take place on the 7-13 September 2015. The Notice of Race for this event has now been published on the Event Website.

A bid from Houston Yacht Club has been received to host the 2017 IFDS Blind Fleet Racing World Championships, the dates will be confirmed at a later date.

Following the 2013 ISAF and IFDS Annual General Meetings, a process was engaged whereby IFDS would become a full committee within ISAF, pending confirmation at the 2014 AGM. This submission was enthusiastically approved by both IFDS and ISAF, creating a new committee within ISAF called the Disabled Sailing Committee (IFDS) or DSC (IFDS). This merger is hoped to encourage promotion of sailing for the disabled within the many nations presently affiliated to ISAF that have not yet embraced this aspect of our sport. It of course also modifies many technical aspects of IFDS management, and will remain a moving process for some time.IFDS Blind Fleet Racing World and International Championships 2015

Many of you are certainly questioning where IFDS stands at present. The former IFDS Executive Committee has therefore become the DSC (IFDS) and the previous Committees of IFDS will be remodelled to become Working Parties. To date, the DSC (IFDS) is comprised of elected members Betsy Alison (USA), Brian Todd (CAN), Wilfred Klein (GER), Sir Henry Sleutel (NED), and presently chaired by Dr Bernard Destrubé (FRA). ISAF is selecting another four or five individuals to complete the Committee, while spreading geographical representation within the group.

Despite the major challenges that we have been facing over the past weeks, this small group has continued to work efficiently managing the upcoming events including of course the ISAF Sailing World Cup events, Eurosaf Regattas, Blind Fleet Racing Championships, ASEAN Para Games and of course the IFDS Combined World Championships. Discussions continue relative to organizing Championships in Rio in the lead up to the 2016 Paralympic Sailing Competition.

We are also engaged in attempting to maintain a better communication strategy, but it must be underlined that communication is only useful when it is based on confirmed facts, and not on rumours or suppositions. Silence does not mean lack of action, but simply indicates that concrete results worth publicizing have not been achieved.

DSC(IFDS) welcomes all constructive comments and suggestions on any topic through the ISAF: Disabled@isaf.com
