IWC Boutique welcomes professional sailing team

The podium result follows a leg win in the opening stage from the Spanish port of Alicante to Cape Town and sees Walker’s team tied on points for the overall race lead with the Dutch and Chinese entries.

Abu Dhabi: The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer and Official Timekeeper of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team (ADOR) and the Volvo Ocean Race 2014–2015 proudly welcomed the sailors at the IWC Boutique The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi on December 28.

The professional sailing team, led by British double Olympic silver medallist Ian Walker, has been staying in the UAE’s capital since arriving in third place of Leg 2 from Cape Town, South Africa, on December 13.

The podium result follows a leg win in the opening stage from the Spanish port of Alicante to Cape Town and sees Walker’s team tied on points for the overall race lead with the Dutch and Chinese entries.

With just a three-week stopover for the crew to catch up on sleep and eat fresh food after 24 days at sea on the way from South Africa, Walker said that the sailors were happy to be in the team’s home port:

“We got a tremendous welcome from the home fans here in Abu Dhabi, who I know are avidly following our progress in the race online. It’s always great to spend time here, but it was a really special moment for me to skipper the Abu Dhabi yacht Azzam home for the first time.”

ADOR had led the fleet for a significant part of the 6,125- nautical-mile leg before dropping to third in the light winds of the equator. They mounted a strong comeback on the final night at sea, however, closing to within three miles of the leading pair, but in the end, they were unable to break through to take the lead.

Despite having to settle for third place, UAE Olympic sailor Adil Khalid, who is on his second Volvo Ocean Race campaign with ADOR, said that the team was still on course to pursue victory overall:

“Our strategy is to shoot for top three positions, rather than to try risky and potentially race-winning moves during each leg. If we can keep getting ourselves on the podium, we will be in good shape to challenge for the overall title in the final stages of the race.”
