K6 Open Regatta 2015 ~ Overall report

K6 Open Regatta 2015 ~ Overall report

Changeable conditions greeted the K6’s for their first event of the 2015 season at Hayling Island SC over the weekend of 24 /25 April in the gorgeous Hayling Bay, two races were completed on Saturday with a further three on Sunday.

Race one started bang on time in a shifting 12 to 15 knots of breeze from the south west. The National Champions of 2014 Lawrence Crispin crewed by his son Luka from Stone Sailing showed a clean pair of heels rounding the windward mark first with local boys David Hitchcock and Ian Nicholson close behind in second with 2012 champions Ian Robson and Simon Tonks from Aldeburgh in third. This order stayed the same along the first downwind leg, however Ian and Simon along with Frazer Elms crewed by Georgie Smith and Tash Styles chose to take an early gybe. This proved a smart move as they gained on the leader closing right down on Lawrence and Luka as they led round the left hand leeward mark. David and Ian spotting a slight shift chose the other leeward mark. This proved correct as there was a favourable port hand lift most of the way along the second beat. They managed to close right up to Lawrence and Luka who placed a tactical covering tack to maintain their lead to the windward mark and indeed take the bullet with David and Ian in a close second.

The sun shone for race two which followed much the same pattern with Lawrence and Luka winning in style.

Saturday evening Georgie Smith celebrated her birthday with the fleet with drinks in the bar followed by dinner, Sunday saw her taking charge of the back end of the boat for her birthday.

Sunday dawned with and lighter breeze from the north. First race of the day saw the birthday girl leading the fleet round the first marked ably crew by Fraser and Tash. However this wasn’t to last as Ian and Simon gybe set favouring the early shift up the left hand side set up an exciting downwind leg. By the time the main contenders reached the leeward marks it was again Lawrence and Luka rounding the right hand mark with a slight lead while David and Ian favoured the left mark. K6-Open-Regatta-2015 Overall-reportThis proved fortunate as the local boys picked up a starboard shift to lead at the windward mark, Ian and Simon also spotting the shift followed. David and Ian held onto their lead taking the bullet with Ian and Simon second, Lawrence and Luka after disentangling themselves from a lobster pot which put them down to fourth just behind Georgie the birthday girl in third.

In race four with the wind increasing and shifting to the north east Lawrence and Luka put the hammer down and led from start to finish determined to make up for their earlier encounter.

The final race of the day saw David and Ian this time choosing the favourable left hand side of the first beat leading round mark with a close scrap for second and third being fought out at the weather mark. Again Ian and Simon gybed early while the rest stayed right. This made it easy for David and Ian to cover and follow the downwind shifts and eventually take their second bullet of the day.

The overall result meant the 2014 National Champions of Lawrence and Luka Crispin took the event from David Hitchcock and Ian Nicholson who were only one point behind in second. This year’s September national championships in Torbay is going to be a closely fought out event with other top competitors joining the fray.

A big thank you to Hayling Island Sailing Club and race officer Nick Rawlings for hosting the shared event with the 14’s and RS 700’s, it was hugely enjoyable weekend sailing, and as ever efficiently run.

The next event for the K6 fleet is the long awaited biannual pilgrimage to Lake Garda in sunny Italy with an international feel to the event with competitors arriving from the USA, France, Germany, Australia, Czech Republic as well as the usual Brits. A large fleet is expected where they will be sharing the event with the exciting Rondar Viper 640 which is now being launched in Europe after its recent growth spurt in North America and Australia. Watch this space and see you all there.
