The 470 Open World Championships will be held this week in Haifa, Israel, with Team Aus11 poised ready to race as defending World Champions.
The Championship will continue through until Saturday, with a final double-points medal race confirming who will be the 2015 World Champion, but also some of the final Olympic quota qualification spots for those countries not qualified at last years ISAF Worlds in Santander of September 2014.
Warm water and consistent sea breezes have greeted the teams here in training prior to the event, which has been a nice change after a notoriously light-air and cold weather season in Europe this year. Despite ongoing reports of violence in Israel, Haifa feels considerably safe and it has been an eye opening experience for teams to be able to learn a lot about the history of this country on days off being tourists.
The Israeli National Championships were held as a warm-up event in the days prior to the main event, and after four days of tough racing; it was pleasing for our team to come out on top. With some of the other top teams choosing not to compete, the team is still wary though that like any other World Championships, it will not be easy, and no doubt the level of competition will be tough!
After only a short period since the Rio Olympic Test Event in which the team narrowly secured the win, it is thanks to the guidance of our Super-Coach Victor Kovalenko that we now feel ready for this unique challenge to back-up this performance, and race well again here this week.
