Youth week was held at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. With over 300 competitors registered there was plenty of activity and atmosphere around the club.
25 O’pen BIC’s entered the prestigious regatta with competitors travelling from all over Australia, looking to get in some regatta experience in preparation for the 2015 O’pen BIC World Championships this coming Christmas period.
A number of new faces emerged at the event and, one in particular, Josh van Roon, caught the eye of spectators. Josh is a well-established Optimist sailor boasting some excellent results. He quickly adapted to the O’pen BIC and let current World Champion Kristen Wadley know he wasn’t there to make up the numbers.
The battle at the front of the fleet made for some great spectating but Kristen showed her experience and skill to sail to yet another victory in the O’pen BIC’s.
All in all the regatta was a great success. The weather played its part in making things tricky for the race committee who had to abandon and postpone at least once every morning resulting in the kids having to spend some long days on the water. Nothing they are not used to though!
Mini battles took place throughout the fleet, and with plenty of surprise results in the overall standings this was yet another competitive and fun event for the O’pen BIC’s.
