RYA Youth Nationals~More Light winds for Day 2

Day 2 of the RYA Youth Nationals had an even slower start before an action packed day of racing at WPNSA. The 29er fleets got lucky, they launched early and completed their three scheduled races in the harbour while the others waited for wind in the bay.

Eventually, the wind did come in and the rest of the fleets started racing in the early afternoon. In the 29er class Bobby Hewitt and Harvey Martin take over the lead. The 15-year-olds once again showed their light winds prowess, winning the first two yellow fleet races. Dan Venables and Patrick Keech are just two points behind as the event now splits the fleets into gold and silver.

High flyers were Rowan Edwards and Daniel Blight who jump up the leader board in impressive style. The pair moved from 16th to third after three top five results, including a win in the second race.

After three hours of waiting for wind in the bay, the 420 class returned to the harbour for two races in the afternoon. Sarah Norbury and Mari Davies, defending girls Youth National Champions, had a successful day, they are now first girls and third overall. Martin Wrigley and Marcus Tressler take the leader’s yellow sail spots, with a five point advantage, from Max Clapp and Ross Banham.

The Lasers commenced with a race in five knots of wind across the bay course. Michael Beckett led from the start but had a small match race towards the end with rival Henry Wetherell. The pair are tied for the lead with Anthony Parke in third.

Despite an impressive performance by Daniel Whiteley, the points at the top of the Laser Radial boys’ fleet remain close. Whiteley battled his way through for line honours. Jack Cookson is second and Matt Whitefield third.

In the Spitfire event, local sailor, Sam Barker and Victoria Akhurst displayed their expert knowledge of the harbour by winning both races today. Barker, defending RYA Youth National Champion enjoyed the day of tricky conditions. Second are Eddie Bridle and James King.
In the mixed RS:X event, Emma Wilson celebrated her 16th birthday with a win in the last race, becoming the only person to beat brother Daniel so far this week. Despite being overcome by his sister in the last race, Daniel Wilson remains dominant and has a six point lead going into Wednesday
