Sailing Arabia The Tour 2015

EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour 2015 will visit some of the most beautiful marinas in the Arabian Gulf.

The event will start with an opening ceremony at The Wave, Muscat, then follow the fleet to Sohar and around the Musandam Peninsula to the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain.

With a complete lack of wind in the start area off the International Maritime College Oman in Sohar, the race team have made the decision to postpone the start.

The fleet is now under motor making 6kts of boat speed, following the committee boat heading north along the Musandam Peninsula.

Muscat, February 14, 2015:  Premier GCC yachting destinations Almouj Marina in Muscat and Mourjan Marinas – Four Seasons Hotel Doha, are gearing up to host top international sailors in next week’s EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour. 
The prestigious event will cast off from Mourjan Marinas-managed Almouj Marina this Sunday 15 February following an opening ceremony at The Wave, Muscat. 

Designed to reignite the Middle East’s maritime heritage and showcase the region’s beauty, the fleet of identical Farr 30 yachts will pass through the finest sailing destinations on offer in Oman, the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain.

The marina features 112 berths, accommodating yachts up to 40 metres in length, as well as seven-days-a-week fuel service and five-star concierge service.

Despite an early start, with breakfast at 0600 and buses to the marina at 0700, the teams are in good spirit. The fleet is now preparing to bid farewel to the first host port at the International Maritime College Oman.

Teams have just arrived at the marina in Sohar for an early morning start of Leg 2. The wind remains light which could affect the time of the start. The race committee may decide to send the fleet off under motor and start the fleet further up the coast towards the Musandam Peninsula.

EFG Bank has crossed the finish line at 11:52:50, followed by averda finished at 11:59:35. The Race officer has set the time limit to 15:58:50. the race officer is optimistic that all the boats would finish within the time limit.

The wind has now increased to 8kts and the first boat to cross the line EFG BAnk is likely to finish within the next 15 minutes. They are on a close reach with spinnakers up as they head for the line.

The committee boat is now in position for the finish.

The wind out there is still light from the east but the race team have just spotted the leading two boats EFG Bank (Oman) – Sidney Gavignet – and Team Averda (Oman) – Marcel Herrera.

They are now just over three miles to the finish and the latest ETA from the committee boat is approximately 1.5 hours (1300).

Both teams are making 7kts sailing well towards the finish line.

The wind remains shifty and the lead has changed once again in the last half hour. EFG Bank (Oman) – Sidney Gavignet – is now back in the lead again with 10 nm to the finish. Team Averda (Oman) – Marcel Herrera – has dropped to second, a mile astern. They are both sailing at 4.5kts.

GAC powered by Dongfeng Race Team (China) – Nick Moloney – is now in third place with Team Renaissance (Oman) – Fahad Al Hasni – in fourth.

The latest news is that in the light airs Team Averda (Oman) – Marcel Herrera – has managed to overtake EFG Bank (Oman) – Sidney Gavignet. Team Averda seem to have found a little puff of wind and sniggled through while EFG Bank sits in a hole. The wind is no more than 1-2kts and the latest ETA into Sohar is between 1200 and 1400.
