Great closing ceremony for the 21st Singapore Straits Regatta after Glasgow Kiss team sealed Championship Crown
Welcome back to the magnificent Sentosa Island and One 15 Degree marina, host venue for the 21st Singapore Straits Regatta. The decisive day has dawned and the fire of determination is glowing bright in the eyes of the sailors. Today’s performance will decide the podium!
The Singapore Straits Regatta carries an impressive history, stretching back to 1994. Local enthusiasts, driven by a goal to cement Singapore’s position as a yachting hub and grow the local keelboat scene, created an international event.. 21 years later and Singapore is very much at the forefront of the sailing world!
Out on the race track and the SB20 fleet had to dig deep, and produce their best teamwork and skill in the 2 remaining 6-leg Upwind Downwind races. Results would determine the Asia Pacific Champion!
A frisky breeze, with gusts reaching up 20 knots, set the stage for the final races. The team on Glasgow Kiss from Great Britain, skippered by Nils Razmilovic, mastered the conditions. They racked up another win and a 3rd place to seal the Championship crown. Germany’s Johannes Babandererde and his Werner Team secured the silver, with the British Pocapena Team, skippered by Mike Buchanan, claiming bronze!
Sailing is not a man’s world. Women are always in the mix – and regularly at the front. Women’s teams are more than able to challenge men on the leaderboard and give them a run for their money, and can handle the boat equally skillfully. Women often join the men for mixed racing – adding their talent to the team.
The other fleets, returned to Singaporean waters after great racing on the other side of the straits, in Indonesia. Singapore’s Foxy Lady VI secured victory, and Australia’s Fujin team skippered by Mike Tilden came in second. In the J24 Class, the overall results were a Singaporean 1,2,3. Shoon Fung Too, skippered by Gordon Maxted won, Waka Tere in 2nd and Shengli in 3rd.
The impressive closing ceremony showered the winners with prizes and applause. All teams enjoyed the warm hospitality, weaved with a typical Singaporean tropical touch. Another year of great racing and great memories. Teams will be back next year.
