It’s still very early days but we could be seeing the first signs of a fleet split, with Team Brunel and Team Alvimedica choosing not to push south and sail a more easterly course.

Catching the tropical storm Pam is no longer an option as a travelling high-pressure system has moved north, setting itself up as the next hurdle to navigate through. The only remnant left in Pam’s wake is a 3 to 4 meter wave state that will become uncomfortable if the wind drops.
The next 24 hours will be about finding that orthodromic line (shortest distance between two points on the earth) to Cape Horn, or to the start of the ice limit that is stopping them from sailing further south.
