Volvo Ocean Race teams rest up

The Volvo Ocean Race crews are enjoying some well-earned rest before the fleet heads off on the fifth leg next weekend.

But while the racing has stopped, it’s all go in the boatyard.

All six of the Volvo fleet have been stripped down and rebuilt before heading into the Southern Ocean.

Team SCA shore manager Richard Mason says the boats are being comprehensively checked over.

“Everything’s off them completely. We check and dye-test every single part, the same with the yacht, all the rudder bearings are out; it’s in a thousand pieces right now. We check it all and starting putting it back together and start relaunching the boats on Sunday.”

Making that massive job easier is the use of identical boats for the first time in the race, meaning teams are able to share facilities, suppliers and even the workforce.

The one-design boats have also produced close racing, with four different crews taking line honours over the first four legs.

A new electronic tracking system is also influencing the fleet, allowing teams to be able to monitor their rivals’ every move. Mr Mason says this allows for even more tactically driven racing.

“You just don’t want to get out of sight with the other guys because you want to be able to cover them… It’s creating some incredibly tight racing.”

But the real test will come on the longest leg of the race from Auc

kland to Brazil. Mr Mason says the

boats will be pushed to their limits.

“It’ll be game on. We’ll see some big runs and these boats, because they’re as strong as they are, they can probably push them a little bit harder. The razor edge is going to get sharper and a little bit thinner.”

The boats are due back in the water this weekend, before setting sail on March 15.
