Viking Explorers Rally 2025
The Viking Explorers Rally 2025, on their way across the Atlantic
The eighth edition of the Viking Explorers Rally departed as scheduled, on January 6th from Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, towards the stunning shores of Grenada, the Spice Island of the Caribbean.
Together, they will sail approximately 2,700 nautical miles across the Atlantic, with Port Louis Marina in Grenada as their final destination.
With an intermediate stop planned at Marina Mindelo in Cape Verde, the fleet set sail in very light wind conditions and would then experience some stronger north easterly winds on their way to Mindelo for the remaining days; a total of approximately 850-miles until the Island of Sao Vicente.
The fleet consists of 22 boats, 9 catamarans and 13 monohulls. The boats range in size from 12m to 20m. (40ft to 66ft). There are 86 sailors in total, including 2 children aged 5 and 7, as well as 1 cat and 4 dogs representing a total of 21 countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Australia, Sweden, Norway, the UK, Slovakia, France, the USA, Canada, the Philippines, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Denmark, Spain, and Lithuania.
In the weeks leading up to departure, participants engaged in seminars, webinars, guided tours, sundowners, dinners, and final preparations. On January 4th, the Skippers Briefing gathered all captains and first mates to discuss the route, weather updates, and marina approach procedures. After deliberation, the fleet unanimously decided to depart on January 6th, between 09:00 and 12:00 UTC, as scheduled.
Ahead of departure, the rally team then coordinated the testing of satellite communication systems and tracking to ensure all vessels could stay in contact with each other and the Onshore Tracking team. Provisions, including deep-frozen and vacuum-packed meats, fresh vegetables, fruits, and pharmacy supplies were delivered, distributed to participants and supervised by the organization. That evening, the crews enjoyed the Captains’ Dinner, sponsored this year by Seven Star Yacht Transport. The route between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde will take most of participants between 5-7 days.
The Viking Explorers Rally has established itself as a compelling alternative for Atlantic crossings. Unlike competitive races, this 2,700-nautical-mile adventure emphasizes camaraderie, safety, and enjoyment. Since its inaugural event in 2018, the rally has grown in popularity, attracting sailors from around the world. With a maximum of 25 boats allowed each year, the Viking Explorers Rally offers an exclusive experience, focusing on exceptional customer service and fostering strong connections among participants. The rally continues to stand out as a distinctive and memorable way to sail across the Atlantic.
